2006 Gibson Flying V – Glas Custom Fully Upgraded

Feather-light at just 6.2 lbs and built during Gibson’s revered Good Wood Era, this 2006 Flying V was a pro touring bands number 1 for nearly 20 years. Been around the world many times, and played on countless sessions here in L.A. As of this year she was retired...... We completely rebuilt her, and she has been fully upgraded from top to bottom-into a new and improved pro-touring machine. Acoustically it rings like a bell, and plugged in it rips with vintage warmth and modern bite thanks to Duncan pickups and all-new, pots, vintage caps and wiring. Road-worn, broken-in, and set up to shred straight out of the case — this one’s both sonically and aesthetically one of a kind.

The guitar has received a full professional refret with vintage medium wire, for a classic "fretless" feel followed by a precise crown, dress, and polish, leaving it ready for years of stage and studio work. Electronics have been completely rebuilt with brand new 450g 500k CTS pots, true vintage wiring, and a vintage 1960s KBG USSR- paper-in-oil 0.025µF capacitor for authentic warmth and response. The pickups and bridge were replaced/installed by us a few years back and we kept them in as they are perfect. Great feel, and sound amazing in this axe. A Seymour Duncan SH-1n sits in the neck position delivering that smooth, articulate PAF character, while an SH-4 (JB) in the bridge brings tight crunch and bite for a perfect balance. The switching is handled by a brand new Switchcraft toggle, with output through a top-of-the-line Pure Tone multi-contact ¼” jack for absolute reliability.

Cosmetically, the guitar sports brand new custom cut black 3-ply plastic, and black/silver truss rod cover and a fresh set of Kluson Deluxe vintage tuners that complement its classic look. It comes housed in a vintage made in Canada Gibson V hard case.

The neck has a super comfortable profile that sits right between a rounded ’50s and slim ’60s carve, measuring 0.83” at the 1st fret and 0.91” at the 12th, with a 1 11/16” nut width and a smooth 12” fingerboard radius. The rosewood board is nice and dark, with rounded edges and is smooth under the fingers, offering just the right balance of warmth and snap. She’s also feather-light at just 6.2 lbs, yet perfectly balanced — a joy to strap on for long sets or studio hours. Set up with 9–42 strings, the action is super, super low and fast, making it a total shred machine that plays like hot butter. The truss rod functions perfectly, and the guitar is structurally sound with amazingly no breaks or repairs.

Acoustically, she rings like a bell — loud, clean, and articulate, with a resonance that lets you know immediately this is a lively piece of wood. Plugged in, it’s just as impressive: the SH-1n in the neck brings warmth and clarity with a sweet, vintage-style bloom that makes clean tones sing, while the SH-4 in the bridge packs tight lows and an aggressive upper midrange bite that cuts beautifully through a mix. Together, they create a versatile pairing that handles everything from glassy cleans to saturated overdrive without breaking a sweat. Whether you’re chasing classic rock, blues, hard rock, or full-on metal, this guitar has the power, definition, and character to deliver.

Built during Gibson’s highly regarded “Good Wood Era” (mid-’80s to late 2000s), this Flying V benefits from lighter, resonant mahogany and outstanding craftsmanship that players and collectors alike prize today. It’s a perfect example of why guitars from this period have become so sought after.

There’s plenty of evidence of its road-worn life — dings, marks, and honest playwear throughout, she has been buffed to a mid satin gloss, but the neck has been left worn and natural and feels so, so good — all of this only adds to its undeniable mojo. We’ll call it an 8.5/10 for condition, with every bit of character earned through years of heavy use, but the phenix is now ready to rise again!

No expense has been spared on this build, and the result is a Flying V that feels broken-in, sounds huge, and is ready for anything from the studio to the stage. A killer example of a modern workhorse V, with upgrades that make it truly stand out. While not a collector’s piece in the traditional sense, this is the kind of guitar that becomes a lifer’s number one. Both aesthetically and sonically, it is truly one of a kind.

Here at GG, we are passionate about preserving, restoring, and reimagining great instruments — keeping them on the road, in studios, and in players’ hands where they belong. Every guitar that leaves our shop is set up to rip straight out of the case, with the kind of dialed-in feel that only comes from musicians who play as hard as they build. We’re all players ourselves, and we only put out instruments that we’d be proud to take on stage or into the studio.

We also believe in sustainability and responsibility; whenever possible, Glas Guitars uses recycled and reclaimed materials, from packaging to shop supplies, reducing waste and honouring the legacy of the instruments we handle. Buying from us means supporting not only the history of these guitars, but also a more thoughtful future for music gear.
