This one is a bit special... Pro L.A. session player's Dan Smith-era USA Jazz, bought new in late '83 in Olympic White, with a parchment pickguard, full active Seymour Duncan pickups, and electronic upgrades. Comes with a nice Tweed case. Very clean axe all over, definitely been on many a recording for sure...
The alder body has aged beautifully, now with a nice cream tone. The plastics are the same and she looks great. The bass is feather-light at only 8.8 lbs and is beautifully balanced.
This axe had a full professional rework done in the mid to late '80s, with the pots being upgraded in '88 to PTO10s, and an oil-and-paper .1uF cap added. In addition, a Gotoh high-mass bridge was added at that time (it’s only mounted with the three bolts to keep it a non-destructive mod). The pickups are the Duncan STC-2P Active PJ set with on-board dip switching for additional tone shaping, added in 2013 with a pro routing job completed here in L.A. (it’s so clean it looks factory).
The body is super clean with only a few small indents on the rear and some top-layer scratches, but honestly, it’s crazy clean for a 40+ year-old axe. The guitar is a 9.5/10 for condition.
The rosewood neck is super clean with really no marks to be found. The board is nice and dark, with some amazing wood grain, and the truss rod is nice and tight. This sports the Medium C-profile with a 7.25 radius, measuring .82" at the 1st fret and .96" at the 12th fret. The nut is 1.624" wide, and the neck has a lovely fast feel to it. The vintage small frets are super clean and have tons of life left in them. They have been fully dressed and polished. The headstock is clean all over with some slight wear on the finish below the Precision logo area.
This bass plays better than most we’ve ever had—it’s super low and fast, effortless to play, and sounds INCREDIBLE. We can’t say enough about her—truly a treasure of a bass that can do it all.
The original molded case is long gone, but it comes with a cool and clean retro-style Tweed case that looks superb. (Note: We do not have any of the original parts, the axe is as listed.)
This killer bass is set up with Slinkys and plays like an absolute dream. These Dan Smith axes are exceptional instruments, offering remarkable playability, tone, and aesthetics. This one is particularly outstanding.
At GG, we’re all players, and we ensure every guitar is ready to rip straight out of the box. Each instrument is stripped down, inspected, authenticated, and fully serviced from top to bottom before being perfectly set up. This bass is no exception—it’s a true killer and ready for its next lucky owner!
